In southern regions, the rainy season (typically March–July) brings prolonged high temperature and humidity. These conditions pose real risks to the optical components and electronic systems of intraoral scanners.
Risks of High Humidity
1. Lens mold growth – Persistent high humidity can allow mold to develop on optical surfaces, leaving permanent spots that cannot be cleaned.
2. Circuit corrosion – Moisture entering the handpiece or base can corrode circuit boards and cause short circuits.
3. Frequent fogging – Both internal and external surfaces of the scanning tip fog more easily.
4. Calibration target damage – Moisture inside the calibration device reduces accuracy.
5. Contact oxidation – Metal contacts between tip and handpiece oxidize, leading to poor connection or recognition failures.
6. Reduced battery performance (wireless models).
Moisture-Prevention Measures
1. Environmental Control
• Run the operatory air-conditioner in dehumidification mode and maintain relative humidity between 40% and 60%.
• Even on non-working days during the rainy season, power the scanner on for 1–2 hours daily so its internal heat helps drive off moisture.
• Use a dedicated dehumidifier in the clinic or storage area.
2. Proper Storage
• When not in use, store scanning tips in a sealed container or dust-proof bag with fresh desiccant.
• Keep the calibration target in a moisture-proof cabinet or dry box.
• Cover the scanner cart with a breathable dust cover - avoid completely sealing it in non-breathable plastic.
• Replace or regenerate desiccant regularly.
3. Scanning Tip Management
• After sterilization, extend drying time to 45–60 minutes to ensure complete dryness.
• Never place a still-warm tip into a sealed container (temperature difference causes condensation).
• Inspect the optical window for any mold spots before every use.
4. Electrical Maintenance
• Periodically check electrical contacts; clean oxidation with anhydrous alcohol or dedicated contact cleaner.
• Keep power adapters and cables dry.
• Use a UPS with surge protection, especially during thunderstorm season.
5. Data Safety
• High humidity increases the risk of hard-drive failure - strengthen regular data backups.
• Do not place the computer tower directly on the floor where rising damp is more likely.
Important Note on Mold
Once mold spots appear on the optical coating, they cannot be removed by cleaning. The tip usually requires replacement. Prevention is far more effective and economical than repair.
Aident Recommendations for Humid Climates
The Aident AI-30 incorporates anti-fog heating and robust sealing design that help resist condensation under normal clinical conditions. Combined with the storage and humidity-control practices above, clinics in high-humidity regions can significantly reduce moisture-related risks and maintain consistent scanning performance year-round.
